Volunteers: Enroll with WhAAM and WVC

Dear WhAAM volunteer,

We have begun partnering with the Whatcom Volunteer Center to help recruit, keep track of, and reward volunteers.  I met with them recently, and they are the nicest people in the world.

What does this mean for you?

First, all WhAAM volunteers need to enroll with Whatcom Volunteer Center:

http://www.whatcomvolunteer.org/pdf%20files/Volunteer%20Enrollment%20Fall%202006.pdf

or visit http://www.whatcomvolunteer.org/volunteers/volunteersindex.htm

There are a lot of great reasons to sign up with them.  Check out http://www.whatcomvolunteer.org/volunteers/benefits.htm

Once your application is complete, we are all going to need to start reporting our volunteer hours each month.  If you're volunteering at an event, it means remembering to sign in at the beginning of the event.  For those of us working from home, it means emailing me or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it BEFORE the month is over how many hours you worked that month.

This helps WhAAM, because it helps us get grants and the like.  It helps you since it creates a record of your volunteer time (which is often deductible on your income taxes).  So please, help both of us out, enroll with Whatcom Volunteer Center, and start reporting your hours.

Lastly, we are going to resume doing background checks on volunteers.
This means everyone needs to fill out and return a WhAAM application for our files.

It's a basic precaution, one that WVC wants us to do.  Now, if, say, you've been arrested in the past, it doesn't necessarily mean you can't work for WhAAM.  What we're looking for mainly is crimes against children.  You cheated on your taxes and spent a little time in a minimum security prison?  You can still sell bottled water at the No-Fi show.

Cheers, volunteers!  Please email me with any questions.  All of this will go on the website soon, and extra forms will be available at the venue in one of the white binders.
